GeoTREE Center Receives Grant Funding

GeoTREE Center receives $720,000 in grant funding from the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency's University Research Initiatives program

The GeoTREE Center has been awarded nearly $720,000 in grant money from the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (part of Department of Defense). The funded reseach project is entitled "Real-Time Predictive Framework for Mosquito-Borne Diseases". This is a five-year project with collaborators from Purdue University and Iowa State University. GeoTREE Director Ramanathan Sugumaran and GeoTREE Research Associate John DeGroote will coordinate the research.

Dr. Petrov receives NSF funding to conduct a spatial analysis of creative capital in the Arctic.

Dr. Petrov has been awarded a two-year grant by the National Science Foundation Office of Polar Programs to study human capital in the Arctic. Using data from Arctic countries he will examine spatial distribution, economic role and community development potential of creative capital (individuals who either possess high levels of education and/or are engaged in creative types of activities) in northern peripheries. Dr. Petrov will also lead the effort in developing a web-based GIS portal that will provide northern communities and decision-makers with information on regional and local creative geographies. Dr. Petrov named assistant director of GeoTREE Center

Dr. Andrey Petrov has been named Assistant Director of GeoTREE Center effective July15th, 2009. Dr. Petrov is an Assistant Professor of Geography and Geospatial Technology at UNI. He received his doctorates from Herzen University in Russia and from the University of Toronto in Canada. His research interests include applications of remote sensing and GIS technologies for spatial economic analysis, population analysis and environmental change. He will closely work with GeoTREE Director, staff and students on various research projects.

Training Announcement: Basic Hazards United States, Multi-Hazard (HAZUS-MH)

Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Division in conjunction with the University of Iowa and the GeoTREE Center at the University of Northern Iowa will provide training on HAZUS-MH MR3 to assist counties, local governments and tribal organizations in the use of HAZUS-MH. This free course is titled "Basic HAZUS-MH". The course will be held in Cedar Falls, Iowa at the Department of Geography, 205 Innovative Teaching and Technology Center, University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, IA 50614-0406. The course will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, July 27nd, and conclude at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28th, 2009. Dress is casual.
