Iowa LiDAR Mapping Project

The GeoTREE Center LiDAR web mapping data delivery application provides a variety of modern mechanisms for accessing raw first- and second-generation LiDAR products, as well as derived products. The Center has supported the delivery of LiDAR data via this application for 15 years and in recent years updated with second-generation LiDAR data products delivered in modern cloud-native formats (Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF).

       LiDARHillshade

The GeoTREE Center updated the old version of the Iowa LiDAR data dissemination application by adding access to the circa 2020 or more current LiDAR statewide data collection, and new modern data access mechanisms. The new and updated application enables access to raw LiDAR data and multiple derived elevation and other geospatial products for the whole state through Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF (COG) formats. These formats provide a seamless way to display data for the whole state and also allow for geoprocessing or analysis for smaller sections study areas. It can be accessed here LiDAR Project.

Iowa Solar Asset Mapping

The UNI GeoTREE Center has developed a web mapping portal to provide interested citizens and businesses in Iowa access to modeled potential solar radiation for all locations in Iowa. The web portal, entitled Iowa Solar Asset Mapping, provides the ability to zoom anywhere based on an address or location in the state and define an area of interest and see estimated annual and monthly solar radiation values. It also provides estimated solar radiation values for known building footprints in several counties in many counties and cities in Iowa. In addition, the raw LIDAR Digital Surface Model (DSM) and modeled Solar Radiation Modeling data can be downloaded for the whole state via very small Virtual Raster Table (VRT) files (links below). These VRT files access Cloud Optimized GeoTIFFs (COG) on GeoTREE servers. They allow GIS visualization and analysis without having to download large raw datasets.

ArcSLAMM Package - ArcGIS Pro Updated Version Coming Soon!

The ArcSLAMM package is a set of ArcGIS script tools organized in a single toolbox as well as a set of database files and user guide documentation. The purpose of the ArcSLAMM package is to provide geoprocessing functionality that will allow the urban stormwater quality model WinSLAMM (Source Loading and Management Model for Windows) to be more efficiently applied for small to moderate sized urban watersheds. The tools in the ArcSLAMM toolbox are meant to be used as part of a workflow that results in the creation of WinSLAMM compliant database files that can be used in WinSLAMM for individual modeling or batch processing of multiple drainage areas or catchments. The ArcSLAMM tools work with a customized intelligent geodatabase created to allow easy creation of WinSLAMM compliant files.

The ArcSLAMM package was originally developed with funding from the Iowa Water Center with later funding from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship's State Soil Conservation Committee Research and Development Grant. Any questions please contact John DeGroote.

ArcSLAMM Modeling Results

The UNI GeoTREE Center utilized the ArcSLAMM package and WinSLAMM on multiple urban watersheds and results from those efforts can be found below. These applications were meant to provide practical examples of utilizing the ArcSLAMM/WinSLAMM system. In addition, a web mapping application has been published for each of the watersheds: Indian Creek Watershed, Easter Lake, and Dry Run Creek.
